TCB Review:
I’ve had high hopes that there would be a downtown spot to replace Hamil’s old diner feel, no-frills breakfast standards and chatty servers since it closed. With an owner that looks like she could have just changed her attire and walked down the street to open the Checkered Apron, and with advertising of home-style cooking, the place caught my attention. And looking over the breakfast menu, I was happy to see house-made corned beef hash and biscuits and gravy.

My first experience with the spot, though, left much to be desired. It took a full minute for anyone to come out of the back room to greet me, and I had to check the sign to make sure they were open. The server did fill up my cup of so-so joe once or twice but never did ask how my food was. If he had, I would have told him the corned beef hash was okay, and that the last bite of my toast tasted moldy – not stale, but very much like mold.

On my way out I did tell him, and he reassured me the bread is baked fresh daily. I’ll take him for his word, and if I can get the taste out of my mouth I may try another visit before deciding on a rating for the place.

a new joint in the lumber exchange building...excellent corned beef hash with 3 egg breakfast...also try the wonderful caramel pecan rolls...service is solid...family run...i also really enjoy the pot roast sandwich with mushrooms and cheese for lunch...they put together a "senior" menu with smaller portions so ask for that menu if the 3-4 eggs breakfast is too much...they are adding items to the menu as they become popular...i really hope this place stays open...i didn't care for the pork chop sandwich..that's the only thing i have tried that i didn't like...too crunchy! chicken salad sandwich good too...haven't tried the pancakes but a friend swears by them...good bacon...this summer they have outdoor seating on hennepin for great people watching!

I stumbled across this place on the way to a happy hour. It's in a fantastic building, the Lumber Exchange. I dined alone to check it out. I was pleased with the service, the ambiance, and the food. I sat at a window seat and faced the venerable Augie's and Brass Rail. I ordered the daily special, which on this particular day happened to be a Meat-Lover's Skillet. Chopped pork links, bacon, and ham over a bed of hashbrowns with two eggs on top. It was comparable to what you'd get at Country Kitchen or Embers in my opinion. The location is what makes this place special, I dig the brass window sills.
